We are pleased to announce that Racic Ferndandez is the 2020 HIE Help Center Scholarship winner! Racic is a student at Texas State University, who is working towards a career as a pediatric nurse.
In her essay, Racic wrote about how her experience as a dancer sparked her interest in the medical field. She had begun to experience foot pain in pointe class, but her mother struggled to find a pediatric doctor who focused on orthopedics. Racic thought about pursuing this as a career path herself, and even shadowed a pediatrician during her junior year of high school. During that time, however, it was the nurses that really inspired her. They interacted more with the patients, and fostered an environment of trust and care with the children. It was that compassion and dedication that inspired Racic to go into pediatric nursing.
Racic also wrote about her experience growing up with a sister who has disabilities, and how this has also influenced her career path. Witnessing her sister’s experiences taught her the value of compassionate care and support. She encourages others to respond to people compassionately, regardless of any differences they may have.
“I learned that my sister didn’t want to be treated differently despite not looking like every child in her classes. I know that kids want to be cared for and they want to be heard.”
Congrats again, Racic! We hope this scholarship helps you get one step closer to achieving your goals.
